Kirito was seriously injured after being attacked by a member of the "Laughing Coffin" guild in the real world. He was taken by the government research organization RATH to the offshore base "Ocean Turtle" and treated using a new device called the Soul Translator. His consciousness was sent into an enormous virtual world called the Underworld.
